THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF A SOUND MAP By Suoni Pieganti (Melanie Garland & Alberto Sireci) from Melanie Garland on Vimeo.
Thoughts
Walking through Brivezac, South of France, we begin to feel the sounds and noises of an unknown place, feeling how the nature, empty spaces, organic materials, textures and people are forming a place and a community. We are particularly curious how the sounds can be transformed into waves drawn in space and on paper, and how sound is gradually transformed and evolved into fictional maps of reality. The fictionalization of geography and territorial limits / geographical and cultural borders can be the bridge to reach a much more abstract and unreal level. In our case we have created a sound map of the sensations and moments experienced in the limbo that we are living, this limbo between our home (our city, country) and Brivezac.
When we decided to "create" a sonorous map of Brivezac, we began to reflect on the impossibility of representing an exact map of reality. With the help of semiotics as an exploration of the significance of words, we start to interpret and re-interpret the sound found. Our creative and artistic work has arrived in the form of performative experimentation. By not having a clear scale of how to transcribe the sound reality on a map, we decided to take directly the reality found to another time/space and create another experience of the same sound but in another physical, conceptual and emotional context, generating a map of "sound signs ". This creation / interpretation was realized together with the local and international community of Brivezac.
