The performative sonic walk “Maritime Deep Resonances,” on July 12th at the Hafen Museum in Hamburg, brought the Atacama Desert aboard the historic Peking. Participants journeyed through the ship’s complex and sometimes uncomfortable histories, tracing early 20th-century connections between its saltpeter mineral cargoes from the Atacama Desert to Hamburg, where the mineral was processed into fertilizer and explosives.
Drawing a parallel to the present, the performance also explored contemporary lithium extraction in the same landscape. Through deep listening, storytelling, and movement, “Maritime Deep Resonances” highlighted the Atacama as a witness to cycles of transformation and the exhaustion of its landscape.

Listening to human and more-than-human voices—birds, winds, minerals—participants were invited to reflect on the ship’s role in maritime connectivity and resource extraction, and on the possibilities for care and renewal across oceans, deserts, and generations. “Maritime Deep Resonances” transformed the Peking into a resonant and dissonant space for collective listening and reimagination, bridging past and present, and inviting new forms of connection through the echoes of the Atacama.&#60;img width="2002" height="1498" width_o="2002" height_o="1498" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/cd45715ea29a71cac870f4f6b7beead38114262e754438e1aa8337381a012427/Screenshot-2026-08-01-at-9.53.51PM.png" data-mid="250897181" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/cd45715ea29a71cac870f4f6b7beead38114262e754438e1aa8337381a012427/Screenshot-2026-08-01-at-9.53.51PM.png" /&#62;&#60;img width="2250" height="1502" width_o="2250" height_o="1502" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5df8ee1ad99b5c4bf257de7d3bfd6c5c106914ce97484aa6ca6adc365b202978/Screenshot-2026-08-01-at-9.53.36PM.png" data-mid="250897182" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/5df8ee1ad99b5c4bf257de7d3bfd6c5c106914ce97484aa6ca6adc365b202978/Screenshot-2026-08-01-at-9.53.36PM.png" /&#62;Credits / Acknowledgements

Field trip Chiloé-Chile February 2025 &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; X
Excerpt from the paper Water Narratives: Islands as Spaces of Possibility (Garland, 2025), published in Journeys Ocean Archive, “OCEAN / UNI's bárawa. Read HERE (in ES and EN)

	Chiloé's Consciousness
In February 2025, my sister, biologist Rosemary Garland, and I traveled to Chiloé for a residency at the Chiloé Museum of Modern Art (MAM). We wanted to explore the long-term effects of one of Chile's worst socio-ecological crises. In 2016, a toxic red tide, exacerbated by decomposing farmed salmon (Armijo, 2020), devastated Chiloé’s coast, exposing its vulnerability to industrial exploitation. This disaster is part of a broader history of colonialism, extractivism, and ongoing coloniality. Since Spanish colonization, Chiloé’s ecosystems and indigenous communities have suffered from external economic interests. Today, the multinational-controlled salmon industry perpetuates colonial structures, commodifying land and sea under capitalist extraction.
&#60;img width="2711" height="3615" width_o="2711" height_o="3615" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b07a7bdb42a4e73575589ea907d0b3138ab61bfd9678ea0fa1896cc4fd11a46e/PHOTO-2025-02-01-19-14-26.jpg" data-mid="226782253" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b07a7bdb42a4e73575589ea907d0b3138ab61bfd9678ea0fa1896cc4fd11a46e/PHOTO-2025-02-01-19-14-26.jpg" /&#62;

Following the 2016 catastrophe, local movements emerged to raise awareness and conscience of the salmon industry’s damage. The crisis exposed the overpopulation of escaped farmed salmon and Chiloé's collapsing marine ecosystem. The industry's expansion, first led by Norwegian companies and now dominated by Japanese-Chinese corporations, is part of a larger extractivist network. Integrated into Chile’s economic model as “progress,” these industries reinforce economic dependence and environmental degradation. Viewing Chiloé through archipelagic thinking (Glissant, 1997) situates the crisis within postcolonial frameworks, highlighting how colonial legacies persist. It also underscores human and nonhuman struggles, resistances, and adaptation within ecosystems.

Listening to the South Pacific Ocean&#38;nbsp;To explore the 2016 disaster's traces, my sister and I recorded Chiloé’s underwater sounds. Walking along its coast, we searched for a spot to use a contact hydrophone, capturing vibrations through materials in water. The Chilote rocks became our connection point.&#38;nbsp;As sound artist Leonel Vasquez calls them,

	&#60;img width="480" height="480" width_o="480" height_o="480" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6953524e58a0d7f2c16e88c2749e522e72b332fd1c3fa8ffedc0795b6114f033/Garland_3.jpeg" data-mid="229558226" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/480/i/6953524e58a0d7f2c16e88c2749e522e72b332fd1c3fa8ffedc0795b6114f033/Garland_3.jpeg" /&#62;Castro, Chiloé 2025 ©Rosemary Garland
  Canto de las Abuelas&#38;nbsp;
(Grandmothers' song), the rocks hold ancestral sonic knowledge and the layered histories of a changing archipelago. We listened as they conversed with the ocean, but the sound was often interrupted by vibrations of the distant hum of merchant ships—a constant presence in Chiloé’s waterscape. Could this be the sound underwater wildlife hear? Has noise pollution become their norm?
To delve deeper into these water sounds, we listened to Catálogo de Olas, a sonic archive by chilean sound artist Fernando Godoy, capturing human and nonhuman struggle narratives of Chiloé 's 2016 ecological fragility. The analog texture deepened our experience, allowing us to feel the recurring narratives of the Pacific’s "slow death," which locals described as "bleeding" during the 2016 red tide disaster.

&#60;img width="1280" height="1280" width_o="1280" height_o="1280" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/a0301d397f2d0f78d4c4b983462744a04e708667d28c18732f426e1ad225e96c/photo_2025-04-09-17.11.19.jpeg" data-mid="229558198" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/a0301d397f2d0f78d4c4b983462744a04e708667d28c18732f426e1ad225e96c/photo_2025-04-09-17.11.19.jpeg" /&#62;
After these deep listening exercises (Oliveros, 2005), we asked: What is an archipelago and what is their conscience? These questions guided our poetic sonority contribution, exploring ecological and sonority dimensions. Ecologically, an archipelago is a group of islands separated from the continent, creating isolation that leads to biological speciation—species evolving independently with distinct genetic differences (Garland, R., 2025). But the concept extends beyond biology into philosophical and spatial realms. The poet Eduard Glissant describes archipelagos as “a space of diffraction,” where diversity fosters relations in harmony with the world. This idea applies to urban space, where urban archipelago helps us understand Chiloé’s fragmented yet connected landscape. The damage caused by salmon farming further reinforces this fragmentation, yet it uncovers the growing consciousness of a changing archipelago, one that embraces an eco-social justice movement advocating for the rights of nature.
Thinking through an archipelago lens helps us reconsider Chiloé not just as an isolated region suffering environmental harm, but as a dynamic space shaped by shifting relationships. It offers a way to challenge the idea of separation—between land and sea, urban and rural—emphasizing instead how these elements are interconnected, fostering a more-than-human consciousness.

		<description>ANARCHIVING OCEAN MARGINSRedefining Maritime Museum Narratives
This research project was selected for the Global Connectivity in Maritime Perspective Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Deutsches Schifffahrtsmuseum and the Leibniz Institute for Maritime History (DSM) in Bremerhaven. The fellowship took place between August and November 2025.

Afterlife project, such as talks, articles, and an audio museum guided walk, soon!
In alignment with the fellowship theme, Global Connectivity in Maritime Perspective, this project seeks to enrich international dialogues on maritime heritage. Focusing on the relationships between Germany, South America and the sea,&#38;nbsp; DSM’s diverse collection offers a valuable resource for this inquiry. By investigating the provenance, layered meanings, and global significance of its artifacts, the project will address colonial and ecological dimensions while foregrounding silenced narratives. This work will reimagine the collection as a platform for transcultural perspectives, employing innovative, multisensory, and collaborative methods to highlight marginalized stories that challenge Eurocentric frameworks. Ultimately, it will contribute to new understandings of humanity’s relationship with the sea and foster deeper connections between past/present maritime histories.</description>

Tracing Beyond Borders
By Melanie Garland

On November 15th 2025, we opened the three days of the Festival Poetic Cartography Berlin in the Amo Salon* together with the curator, poet and dear friend hn. lyonga&#38;nbsp;with a joint recitation of our poem ‘This Is Where We Are’. This poem served as a poetic manifesto, reflecting our festival’s curatorial questions: Who We Are, Where We Come From, and Where We Are going. Rooted in our narratives as people from the Global South, the poem embodied traces of counter-narratives —aspirations and histories interwoven with post-migrant European landscapes.&#38;nbsp;
&#60;img width="2400" height="1601" width_o="2400" height_o="1601" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/fd1e4f64e3811a99c3a80ae7bed0a633e782f6b5f55ed94f41be9bdd1ac6d5d6/201411_Poetic-Cartographies_webpablohassmann_Intigallardo-295.jpg" data-mid="230611579" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/fd1e4f64e3811a99c3a80ae7bed0a633e782f6b5f55ed94f41be9bdd1ac6d5d6/201411_Poetic-Cartographies_webpablohassmann_Intigallardo-295.jpg" /&#62;November 16th 2025, 2nd day of the festival, performance The song to the melting of the ice&#38;nbsp;

In curating the Berlin Poetic Cartography Festival, we explored the possibility of counter-cartographies through poetry, allowing us to reconnect with the notion of “trace.” The “trace,” as Jacques Derrida remarks, is not merely a remainder of thepast but a sign of absence—an interruption that challenges linear interpretations of time and history (Derrida, 1967). In this context, the trace is both a mark toward the past and a force for reimagining the future. Poetic counter-cartography amplifies this notion of trace, subverting dominant narratives to reveal the silenced and erased histories of colonized and marginalized communities. As an artistic method of resistance, poetic counter-cartography transforms the idea of the map from an authoritarian tool into a collaborative process. It reclaims personal and collective histories, allowing narratives to emerge in a fluid and interconnected polyphonic mode that counters the forms of separation and division that shape our world today.

Tracing Collective Geographies
through poetry

Our curatorial process, as well our migratory journeys, has been deeply shaped by traces. Traces that reflect the places we have called home, the relationships that have defined us, the cultural intersections that inform our polifon-identities, and the enduring colonial imprints in our ancestral histories. These traces do not exist as static memories but as dynamic narratives, shaping how we navigate and interpretour worlds. Poetic-counter-cartography, in this sense, is an embodied practice—one that acknowledges the impermanence of memory while celebrating its transformative potential.

 &#60;img width="2400" height="1601" width_o="2400" height_o="1601" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/3cd254141dd1d53110e9f7da8bbcfb0c92d174ef474c6445fcfa05e74f561272/201411_Poetic-Cartographies_webpablohassmann_Intigallardo-171.jpg" data-mid="230611856" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/3cd254141dd1d53110e9f7da8bbcfb0c92d174ef474c6445fcfa05e74f561272/201411_Poetic-Cartographies_webpablohassmann_Intigallardo-171.jpg" /&#62;November 15th 2025, 1st day of the festival, photo by Pablo Hassmann
For the Poetic Cartography Festival, we invited ten poets and artists whose work honors their cultural traces while critically engaging with the colonial legacies that persist in their collective contemporary identities. For instance, the autobiographical poetry of Afro-German Savannah Sipho reflects the intricacies of Afro-descendant people in European cultures. Similarly, Daniela Zambrano brings the ice rituals from South American Andean epistemologies, reimagining the high-altitude ice traditions of Quechua peoples. Rami Shalati’s modular textile installations weave together traces of Arabic migration, creating counter-narratives of identity through fabric interpretation.Through these poets and artists, we sought to amplify multi-voices that challenge Western-centric approaches to mapping. By re-centering diasporic perspectives in the heart of Berlin-Mitte, the festival created a counter-narrative that critically engaged with colonial structures. It foregrounded transcultural and multivocal perspectives, illustrating how diasporic and post-migrant communities are pivotal to decolonial thought.
Throughout this curatorial process, poetry emerged as a tool for counter-narrative. It invites openness to our surroundings, cultivating spaces of connection and transformation. As a counter-narrative, poetry has the power to reshape dominant and fixed spaces into spaces of caring solidarity through emotions, feelings, and community. In this way, thanks to poets, artists, and the public, we succeeded increating a space where poetry serves as a force to break dominant spatial barriers. By amplifying voices normally excluded from historical narratives, we collaboratively created a space of care, solidarity, and neighboring. This festival shows us that tracing excluded histories is not just an act of remembering but a collaborative practice of co-creation—a way of reimagining futures rooted in shared histories. In the interplay between trace and becoming, poetic-counter-cartographies offer a path to building more inclusive spaces, forging connections that transcend borders, time, and place.

The signs-artifacts were part of a public intervention inspired by placards from past anti-racist movements. They guided the Decolonial Flânerie walk, connecting historical struggles to present-day activism. They highlight key events like the fight to rename M*Straße and the Haitian Revolution, bringing together the main themes and stops of the Flânerie. The signs were created by Amo Collective members Melanie Garland, Ingri Pavezi, and Eryn Staiblin in 2023.

		<description>OCEANIC RUINS
Site-specific sonic performative exercise held on May 22, 2023, at Horace's Villa—a large ancient Roman villa complex near Licenza-Rome, Italy. This ruined villa is associated with the Roman poet Horace and his numerous poems about the place. The special elaborate architectural features and location of the villa correspond to the descriptions in the poetry.Oceanic Ruins was a site-specific performance as part of the L'Aquila Reale art residency in Licenza, Rome-Italy
© Camera: L'Aquila Reale
In crafting the Oceanic Ruins performative exercise, my aim was to create an intertwining between the past and the present. Through the resonance of the mobile megaphone transported through Horace's Villa, the timeless echoes of today's Mediterranean sound resonated and vibrated with the Roman imperial heritage infrastructure. This act served as a sonic-tension between ancient imperial heritage and the contemporary complexity of the mobilities of people passing through the same sea. The performative action was intended to evoke a nuanced understanding where the waves of the past and present converge in the same urban landscape.

		<description>SOMEWHERE INBETWEEN part I&#38;nbsp;
 As part of the Somewhere Inbetween, I am reflecting and questioning how and why to exhibit ethnographically —the anthropological method on which some of my research is based. I am interested in stressing the boundaries between artistic practices and ethnography, going beyond the mere duality, and reflecting on the possibility of transdisciplinarity and other methodological ways for the research design within the arts and social sciences.The exhibition was held from June 30th to July 23rd 2022 at LITE HAUS Gallery, Berlin. Afterwards a further elaboration of this exhibition was shown at Chilean Conexión Art festival, Monopol Gallery Berlin. September 1-3, 2022.&#38;nbsp;

I reflect on three informal and self-managed camps, which have been resistant and resilient in the face of the current border regimes, transforming abandoned areas into sociable places.
